I knew what the term was after reading the headline. My maternal grandmother, who grew up in south-central Virginia, called Brazil nuts that. Even as a child, I was appalled. I don't know how I knew it was wrong, but I did. My parents always put raw, mixed nuts in our stockings at Christmas. I loved the meaty nut but disliked the term. The key for me, an old White guy, now is to recognize what terms and behaviors I do and say that can be considered racist. Introspection is a gift of aging if you are open enough to acknowledge your faults.
